Lorena Barrett Evans, 82, passed away on Sunday, February 5, 2017 in Port Charlotte, FL. Lorena was born on February 22, 1934 to Lucien and Velma Barrett in Beattyville, KY. At an early age, the family moved to Louisville, Ky where she was raised. She married Jimmy Evans in 1960. She spent the next 16 years traveling with Jim as a military wife, living in 5 different countries. Jim retired from the military in 1976 in Copperas Cove, Texas. They returned to Louisville, KY in 1979, where she worked as a banker until she retired in 1989. She lived in Mountain Home, AR from 1996-2009, and then moved to Port Charlotte, FL where she spent her final years.
So many people knew Lorena as “Mom”. She took in children as her own wherever she went and loved each one unconditionally. She led a crisis home for troubled children in the ‘70s and provided a stable, loving home to children in need until they could be placed in foster care. In 1989, when her younger sister Anna passed away unexpectedly, she immediately took in her disabled niece and great-niece, and loved them as her own. She spent her whole life taking care of the people she loved.
Lorena was preceded in death by her parents, Lucien Barrett and Velma Begley Barrett Niece; her infant daughter, Ruby Jewell; her brothers, Ralph Barrett, Jesse Barrett, and Seth Barrett; and her sisters, Carrie Jean Barrett, Cledia Slaughter, Anna Hogan, and Eva Bekai. She is survived by her husband of 56 years, Jimmy Ray Evans; her children, Raymond Dennison (Karen), Jimmy Raymond Evans (Sara), Kelly Hogan, and Julia Bohannon (Steven); her grandchildren Michael Dennison, Jimmy Evans Jr., and Jesse Evans; Isaac Bohannon, Lucas Bohannon, and William Bohannon; and great-grandson, Damien Evans; her brother, Richard Barrett, as well as several beloved nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews.
A graveside memorial service will be held at the Barrett family plot at Evergreen Cemetery in Louisville on February 20, 2017 at 9:45AM.
